CHURCH OF S. TOMÉ DE LAMAS (LAMAS)

An isolated church that stands outsider the village of Lamas, once also called the São Tomé de Montejunto Chapel,  is a parish building that has an adjacent cemetery. We believe that this church was already, in the late Middle Ages, a religious centre with a significant number of villages. Oral tradition associates this place to ancient worship and to the Roman presence, the latter being proven by an epigraph roman altar from the 2nd century AD, found by José Leite de Vasconcelos in 1893.

This church suffered the effects of the 1755 earthquake, having since received many improvements, namely, a new altarpiece. The image of the patron saint São Tomé, from the 17th century, is noteworthy.
